Today the SAR consists of over 26,000 members in over 500 chapters in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Almost 165,000 descendants of the men and women Patriots of the American Revolution have been admitted since our founding. SAR members include fifteen presidents of the United States, Brigadier, Lieutenant, and five-star generals, presidents of several colleges and universities, ambassadors, and members of the Supreme Court, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. Congress.
Are you Eligible?
Any man of age eighteen years or over, who is a lineal descendant of an ancestor who supported the war for American Independence is eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. These ancestors are referred to as Revolutionary War Patriots and include those persons who fought in the military and/or militia, who provided supplies to the American cause, who served on political bodies supporting the Revolution, who signed oaths of support and similar acts.
You can discover your ancestry roots through a variety of Ancestry websites, like Ancestry.com and many others. By asking other family members, you may also discover that a member of the family has already joined SAR or Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Knowing this information will help you get started.

Time to Document
With the help of your sponsor, together you will begin to prove your lineage by using a variety of sources, including Census data, previous SAR members, wills, and a variety of other information. Providing as much information to your sponsor from the beginning will make the process smoother and more efficient.
Submit An Application
With the help of your sponsor, together you will fill out an application to the Sons of the American Revolution. If you have all of the required documentation, this process can be very simple and easy to do.
